Short track speed skating, also known as short track speed skating, is an ice racing sport conducted on shorter tracks. Originating in Canada, some speed skating enthusiasts often practiced on indoor ice rinks, which led to the development of indoor speed skating competitions. In the early 20th century, short track speed skating gradually gained popularity in European and American countries. In 1975, the International Skating Union established the Short Track Speed Skating Technical Committee. Since 1981, the World Short Track Speed Skating Championships have been held annually. Short track speed skating was first introduced as a demonstration event at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. It became an official Olympic event at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville.
